Discovering A New Love

Paint by Number Journey 2

I recently fell in love with painting. I do have many talents but being artsy isn’t one of them. At the most I can draw stick figures. But I am pretty good with choosing what colors complement each other. Earthy tones are my favorite.

Moving to a new city and starting a new job are stressful ordeals. And starting a job at a company whose culture and values do not align with mine definitely threw me a curveball. It’s been about three months and I am getting used to the old school and conservative ways of the company, but in the beginning I felt anxious and unsettled. Naturally, this led to sleepless nights and tossing & turning in bed.

I also wanted to feel productive in my personal life, which is where I get my true happiness. Spending long days at work answering emails, crunching numbers, and attending meetings, the direct impact of your work seems lost in the daily grind. And I need to see the tangible impact of my work and feel like I am making a difference. What can I say I am a millennial. So this got me thinking about what I could do to feel productive and ease the anxiety I was feeling about work and moving to a new city.

One of my friends had mentioned paint by numbers and I remember making fun of her. This time however, I thought I would give it a try. And I’m glad I did because these last few weeks have been the most fun! The picture is much more intricate and involved than I thought it would be. But it has definitely served its purpose.

  1. I feel like I’ve done something for myself every day
  2. I feel a sense of calm which gives me a good nights sleep
  3. I will have new artwork once I’m finished with the piece

Now for the big reveal. My work in progress. I will update you guys as I keep painting away. So if you’re looking for an activity to do to relax and have minimal artsy skills, then I highly recommend paint by numbers.
