All my life I’ve followed this mantra, “You’ve got to look your best because you never know when you might be spotted.”
I’m not quite sure how this mantra came to be and why I adopted it as mine but I’ve followed it for many years now. It simply means you have to look your best because you never know when you will be discovered. By discovered I mean scouted by someone whereby you become a celebrity. You always hear of stories of actors or models being discovered at the Mall (Gisele Bundchen) or barbershop (Ryan Phillippe) or pizza parlor (Natalie Portman). I’ve been to all three and am still waiting my turn!
Anytime I stepped outside of my house I made sure to present myself well because “you never know when you might be spotted.” And spotted I was. Last year in 2018 I was at work typing away, doing my job, looking fly when lo and behold my co-worker sitting next to me said unexpectedly, “can I see your hands?” I hesitantly obliged and then she said “they look really nice. Do you have a few minutes free? We need a hand model for our food photo shoot.”
That’s it folks. This is the simple story of how I was spotted. Now you must be saying to yourself “well you actually weren’t spotted, your hands were. While this is true, it’s a start. And my hands are attached to my body, so by proxy I was spotted.
After my first hand model shoot, I became the designated hand model at my company. Few weeks ago there was a photo shoot for new recipes for a new Marketing campaign. Guess whose hands are now prominently featured on the company’s website, shopper campaign, and potential other sources?
If you guessed yours truly then you are correct! What started as a simple ask soon launched my hand modeling career. What are the perks of being a hand model you ask? I shall tell. Free lunches and manicures.
So the lesson in all this is…you ALWAYS have to look your best because you never know when you might be spotted. Saying this mantra over and over again, truly believing in it and living it… enabled life to unfold in such a way that one ordinary day where I was looking my best, my hands were looking their best, I was finally discovered.
The next time you want to step outside in your sweats or with hands that are not moisturized, take a deep breath, think for a second, and then put on those jeans and apply that hand lotion. You’re just a moment away from being spotted.
